OAKLAND, Calif., Oct. 13 (UPI) -- Seventeen people suffered minor injuries when two Amtrak trains collided inside a rail station in Oakland, Calif., rail officials said.

Amtrak said the low-speed collision between Amtrak's San Joaquin, which runs from Bakersfield, Calif., to Oakland, and the Coast Starlight, which runs from Los Angeles to Seattle, occurred about 10 p.m. PDT Wednesday inside Oakland Station.

The collision derailed the lead engines of both trains and caused minor injuries to 17 passengers and crew members.

All rail service into and out of the station was suspended overnight, Amtrak said.

Amtrak and the owner of the tracks, Union Pacific Freight Railroad, will work with federal officials to conduct a complete investigation of the accident, Amtrak said Thursday in a release.
