Petition against gay inclusion law failing

SACRAMENTO, Oct. 11 (UPI) -- A petition against a California law requiring schools to teach about the contributions of gays to history is short of signatures, its supporters say.

The group, Stop SB48, opposes the law requiring the inclusion of the contributions of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people in social science instruction.

Stop SB48 has sent an e-mail to supporters saying, "We do not have enough signatures," the San Francisco Chronicle reported Tuesday.

The deadline for submission of the required 504,760 signatures of registered voters is Wednesday.

Supporters of SB48 say they are being cautious about claiming victory, admitting the real push to overturn the law is threatened by a second ballot initiative aimed at the November 2012 election.

"We always imagined they would try to take another bite at the apple in November," Rebekah Orr of Equality California, the state's major LGBT rights organization, said. "If they don't qualify in a few days, then we need to be prepared for them to qualify in November."
