No bodies found during N.M. lake search

ALBUQUERQUE, Oct. 11 (UPI) -- Federal investigators said they found no human remains Tuesday when they searched a New Mexico lake for victims of a dead suspected serial killer.

"We wouldn't have been out here if we didn't have good idea of where we were supposed to look," FBI Special Agent Frank Fisher said. "We're in the correct area.

"We'll be back in the near future with a smaller team to be able to look in further depth in a few areas we have questions about."

David Parker Ray, who died in prison in 2002 after being convicted of kidnapping and sexually torturing three women, is suspected to have dumped bodies in Elephant Butte Lake near Truth or Consequences.

Ray is suspected to have tortured and killed as many as 40 women, though no bodies have ever been found.

A man, whose name was not released, told KRQE-TV, Albuquerque, Ray hired him to bring concrete out to Elephant Butte State Park during a six-year period in the 1990s. He said the concrete was poured into tires that were big enough in which to hide a body.

The FBI said it was investigating the tip, KRQE reported.

The man said he moved away from the area in 1999 and didn't realize investigators considered the lake a possible dumping ground until he saw recent news reports about the renewed search for bodies.

KRQE said dozens of federal and state officers used boats to look for confirmation of the man's suspicions. About all they appeared to have found was a pair of eyeglasses.
