WASHINGTON, Oct. 3 (UPI) -- A majority of Americans expect voters will send a Republican to the White House in next year's election, poll results released Monday indicated.

The Washington Post-ABC News poll said 55 percent of Americans anticipate a GOP presidential victory in 2012, with only 37 percent envisioning incumbent Barack Obama securing a second term.

The Post said the overall results include a majority of independents who think a Republican will win. Among Republicans, 83 percent say their party's nominee will win while 58 percent of Democrats say they think Obama can be re-elected.

The poll, conducted Sept. 29 to Oct. 2, has a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
