John Edwards trial delayed until January

WASHINGTON, Sept. 9 (UPI) -- Former U.S. Sen. John Edwards' attorneys received a postponement of his trial for alleged violations of campaign finance laws.

The trial, originally scheduled for October, will now take place in January, The Pilot in Southern Pines, N.C., reported Friday.

Defense lawyers said they did not have enough time to examine 400,000 pages of documentation provided by the prosecution and to interview 125 witnesses.

Edwards, who grew up in Robbins, N.C., is charged with six felonies, including a charge that funds from his unsuccessful 2008 presidential campaign were used to support his affair with a videographer working on his campaign.

The videographer, Rielle Hunter, later gave birth to Edwards' child. The one-term North Carolina Democrat was married to Elizabeth Edwards at the time. She died of cancer last year.

The lawyers deny that money given to Hunter for support came from the Edwards campaign.
