Woman kills husband while shooting at dog

JACKSON, Miss., July 16 (UPI) -- A Mississippi woman accidentally shot and killed her husband while aiming at a pit bull witnesses said was going after some children, officials say.

Betty Walker of Jackson was firing a .38-caliber revolver at an 8-month-old pit bull that was trying to attack the children and misfired, hitting her husband Robert in the chest Friday afternoon, The (Jackson) Clarion-Ledger reported. Robert Walker was pronounced dead less than 2 hours later at a hospital.

Police say that although the shooting appeared to be accidental, a Hinds County grand jury will ultimately decide whether Betty Walker will face charges.

The owner of the dog, Lazarius Montgomery, may face charges, however, as witnesses told police the dog, Cocaine, "lunged and tried to attack some children."
