MACEDONIA, Ohio, July 1 (UPI) -- An Ohio retirement community has agreed to allow a veteran of Vietnam and Korea to fly the U.S. flag as he wishes, from a 15-foot pole in his front yard.
The homeowners association at the Villas at Taramina in Macedonia notified Fred Quigley of his victory Thursday in a hand-delivered letter, ABC News reported. American Legion members, Boy Scouts, the Rolling Thunder motorcycle group and other supporters came to his home for a flag-raising ceremony.
Quigley put up his flag pole last year. Soon after, he received a notice that he was in violation of association rules.
The association said flags could only be flown from stanchions attached to houses. Joseph Migliorini, the manager, said poles create additional work for landscaping crews and have to be provided with electrical wiring if homeowners want to fly the flag at night and follow the code that it must be illuminated.
While the dispute never got to court, both Quigley and Migliorini said they had the law on their side. But an outpouring of public support for Quigley apparently changed the association's mind.
"I've gotten calls from Macedonia," Quigley said. "I don't mean from Macedonia, Ohio. I mean from Macedonia."
He plans another flag-raising ceremony for July Fourth on Monday.
