NTSB issues 'Most Wanted' safety list

WASHINGTON, June 23 (UPI) -- The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board Thursday released its "Most Wanted List" of crucial issues, led by air safety, board members said.

All five board members at a news conference in Washington Wednesday announced the "Most Wanted List," which highlights 10 issues that have an impact on transportation safety worldwide.

"The NTSB's ability to influence transportation safety depends on our ability to communicate and advocate for changes," said NTSB Chairman Deborah A.P. Hersman. "The 'Most Wanted List' is the most powerful tool we have to highlight our priorities."

The NTSB began issuing its list in 1990, but the new list is the first one produced under a new format developed over the last several years to modernize and streamline it, officials said.

This year's list includes 10 broad issues the NTSB will highlight during the next year, an agency release said.

This year's "Most Wanted List":

-- Promote pilot and air traffic controller professionalism.

-- Address human fatigue.

-- Promote teen driving safety.

-- Improve general aviation safety.

-- Improve motorcycle safety.

-- Require safety management systems.

-- Improve runway safety.

-- Address alcohol-impaired driving.

-- Improve bus occupant safety.
