Two Memphis police shot in ambush

MEMPHIS, June 6 (UPI) -- Two Memphis officers responding to a report of an armed mentally ill person were ambushed and shot early Monday, police said.

The suspect fired on the officers around 1 a.m., and they returned fire, authorities told The Memphis Commercial Appeal.

The suspect was taken to the Regional Medical Center at Memphis in critical condition and the officers were taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis with wounds that were not life-threatening.

None of the wounded has been identified.
