Minister's son held in fatal road rampage

HONOLULU, June 4 (UPI) -- A minister's son killed a motorist and wounded two others in a baffling road rampage across Honolulu, police said.

"There is no connection between the suspects and victims, and no motive," Maj. Richard Robinson, head of criminal investigation, told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

Toby Stangel, 28, is being held for second-degree murder, first-degree attempted murder and gun offenses, police said.

His father, Mike Stangel, is pastor of North Shore Christian Fellowship in Oahu and chaplain of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing, church leader Bob Prasser said.

Robinson said the shootings began at 12:43 a.m. Friday when Stangel got out of his van on Kapiolani Boulevard, walked up to the car of Tammy Nguyen, 54, and shot her several times, fatally.

He then drove onto the H-1 freeway, rear-ended the car of Amielou Asuncion, 24, pulled up beside her and shot her, police said. She was in serious but stable condition.

Samson Naupoto, 38, slowed down to observe the scene and Stangel shot him, too, police said. He was in stable condition.

At 12:58 a.m. he fired at two police officers making a traffic stop but missed them. Stangel was then apprehended.

He has a record of petty crime, drugs and violence, friends said.

"What would cause someone to do such a senseless act of violence and then continue it on? We have no idea," Prasser told Hawaii News Now.
