SAN ANTONIO, June 5 (UPI) -- San Antonio police said one of its patrol cars accidentally struck and killed a 2-year-old child who had wandered on to a street Saturday night.

German Alonzo was hit by two vehicles after he apparently wandered out of his family's apartment on the city's west side.

Police said the officer driving the car was headed to his station at the end of his shift when he heard a thump and made a U-turn to investigate. The officer, whose name was not released, reportedly did not see the youngster in the road.

"It was an unavoidable accident," Chief William McManus said. "He is a good officer and is extremely upset by what happened."

The San Antonio News-Express said German's parents could face charges for allowing the child to leave their home unattended.
