Court to rule on Wisconsin Senate recalls

MADISON, Wis., June 1 (UPI) -- Wisconsin elections officials have asked a court for more time to determine whether recall elections for three Democratic state senators should go forward.

A court hearing Friday -- the Government Accountability Board's deadline -- is supposed to determine whether recall elections will be held, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reported Wednesday. The board has approved recall elections for six Republican senators, but three of them -- Randy Hopper, Dan Kapanke and Luther Olsen -- filed suit Tuesday to stop the recalls against them.

The other three Republicans looking at recall elections are Rob Cowles, Alberta Darling and Sheila Harsdorf.

The accountability board is requesting an extension until June 10 on the deadline to resolve whether recall elections should take place for Democratic state Sens. Dave Hansen, Jim Holperin and Bob Wirch.

The board said its unprecedented workload has prevented it from being able to take the time to scrutinize challenges to recall petitions filed against them. The board took no position as to whether the Republican recall elections should be delayed.

The case is being handled by Dane County Circuit Judge John W. Markson.

If the court approves its request, the board will decide June 8 whether to hold elections for the three Democrats. If the board found elections should be held, they would be scheduled for July 19 -- a week after the planned recall elections for the six Republicans, the Journal-Sentinel reported.
