Head of DNC has Japanese car

WASHINGTON, May 27 (UPI) -- The head of the Democratic National Committee, a critic of Republicans for failing to support the U.S. auto industry, owns a Japanese car, The Hill reports.

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., told reporters at a Washington breakfast that Republican leaders were willing to let U.S. carmakers "go down the tubes," The Hill reported Thursday.

The Hill found that Wasserman Schultz's household owns a 2010 Nissan Infiniti FX35. The license plate number includes the congresswoman's initials.

"They can try to distract from the issue if they want," Hari Sevugan, a spokesman for the DNC, said. "But if Republican opposition researchers are snooping around garages, they should know that if Republicans -- who said that we should let the U.S. auto industry go bankrupt -- had their way, they wouldn't find a single American made car anywhere."

Japanese car makers also manufacture thousands of cars in the United States every year.
