Teen charges rape aboard cruise ship

MIAMI, May 13 (UPI) -- A Pennsylvania teenager is suing Royal Caribbean cruise lines, alleging that a shipboard singer got her drunk and raped her.

The 17-year-old accuser filed a federal civil lawsuit Thursday in Miami, where the cruise company is based, The Miami Herald reported. The incident was reported but there is no record of criminal charges.

The suit states that the girl, celebrating her high school graduation with her family, boarded the Navigator of the Seas at Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale March 3.

Two days later, when the ship was in international waters, the singer invited her to dance and got her alcoholic drinks, the suit says, with neither the singer nor the bartender asking her age.

"Extremely intoxicated and impaired," she went to the singer's room, where he had sex with her, she charges.

The suit also says another man photographed the activity.

Royal Caribbean spokeswoman Cynthia Martinez said the incident was immediately reported to the FBI and the company offered the teen medical care and counseling. When the ship returned, FBI agents boarded and investigated.

"To date, the company is unaware of any charges being filed against anyone. … The musician in question is no longer employed," the company said.
