TOPEKA, Kan., May 13 (UPI) -- Before adjourning at dawn Friday, the Kansas Legislature passed a bill restricting private insurance coverage of abortion.
Women will still be able to get coverage for elective abortions but would have to buy separate riders with extra premiums, The Kansas City (Mo.) Star reports.
Supporters of the bill, which now goes to anti-abortion Gov. Sam Brownback, say it means policyholders will not have to pay for a procedure they consider immoral or subsidize it for other women through their premiums.
Opponents say the bill inserts ideology into insurance mandates.
The Legislature previously passed measures banning late-term abortions and requiring parental consent for minors.
In its all-night session, the Legislature also passed a budget of nearly $14 billion.
