Bus driver charged in NYC pedestrian death

NEW YORK, May 8 (UPI) -- The driver of a tour bus allegedly flunked a breath test after fatally striking a pedestrian in New York City, police said.

Stephen Drappel, 57, West Palm Beach, Fla., was placed under arrest Saturday night after the incident in the Hell's Kitchen area of Manhattan.

The New York Daily News said Sunday that witnesses reported the bus had to be flagged down by passersby after the victim was hit and dragged along Ninth Ave.

"People were shouting for the bus to stop and it almost rolled over him again," one man said. "I had to walk away -- seeing someone pulled under a bus was just a bloody mess."

Drappel registered a .08 blood-alcohol level, police said, and was charged with drunken driving and vehicular manslaughter, the New York Post said.
