Lawyer: Victim will testify for kidnapper

NEW YORK, May 3 (UPI) -- A lawyer for the woman accused of kidnapping a baby from a New York hospital in 1987 says the girl, now a young woman, will testify for his client.

Robert Baum, the public defender representing Ann Pettway, said he had talked to Carlina White at her new home in Atlanta, the New York Post reported.

"I believe after meeting with her and speaking for a long time, that she will be supportive in every way," Baum said.

Baum was in court Monday for a short conference on the case. White's biological parents were also in court, although they refused to comment.

Pettway allegedly abducted White from Harlem Hospital when she was less than 3 weeks old. Her parents had taken her there because she had a fever.

White only learned when she was 16 that Pettway wasn't her biological mother. She eventually tracked her parents through the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Pettway allegedly physically abused White while she was growing up.
