SAT cheating at New York school?

GREAT NECK, N.Y., March 14 (UPI) -- An investigation is under way into allegations of a college-test cheating ring at a prestigious high school in New York, the New York Post reported Monday.

Sources told the New York Post that a student at Long Island's John L. Miller-Great Neck North High School allegedly hired someone from a top Midwestern university to take his SATs for him.

"There are hearings taking place right now that are ongoing," a school board source told the Post. "I know that the superintendent is talking to various people, including the principal and other administrators, to get to the bottom of what's going on. I know they are looking into several students."

Officials of the school, which has consistently ranked among the best in the nation, declined to comment about the specifics of the matter.

"Cheating on your SAT sort of undermines the entire process of high school and college admission," said a school board member. "It's serious."

Students at the high school -- where some students drive BMWs, Range Rovers and Infinitis -- said rumors of an SAT-cheating ring have been circulating for several months.

"Everyone knows about it," said a female senior. "You get the feeling that it's widespread and not just here in Great Neck."

The school's alumni include film director-producer Francis Ford Coppola, designer Kenneth Cole and Olympic skating champion Sara Hughes.

"They are trying to keep it quiet," said a classmate of one of those accused of cheating on the SATs. "It's embarrassing for the school."

The cheating allegations marked the second setback for the school in recent days. Last week three graduates allegedly robbed a drug dealer.
