Cop-shooting suspect's dog found

WALDPORT, Ore., Jan. 26 (UPI) -- A dog believed to belong to a cop-shooting suspect was found Wednesday in the coastal Oregon resort town where police are hunting for him, police said.

David Durham, 43, of Portland allegedly shot and wounded Lincoln City police officer Steven Dodds during a traffic stop Sunday night and then fled with his dog, Huckleberry, to Waldport, about 40 miles south on Highway 101.

Durham has not been seen since Sunday. But a passerby reported spotting the dog Wednesday morning, The Register-Guard of Eugene reported.

Animal Services Deputy Kerri Taylor said the dog had an injured paw. It will be held for several days at the Lincoln County Animal Shelter and eventually returned to Durham's family.

Officers from federal, state, county and local law enforcement agencies have been combing Waldport all week, checking the community's many empty vacation homes.

Dodds remained in Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland.

"His family and friends are encouraged by his fighting spirit and responsiveness and awareness during their visits," Oregon State Police Lt. Gregg Hastings and Newport Police Chief Mark Miranda said in a joint statement.
