Judge says probation for 'Octomom' doctor

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- The California fertility doctor who assisted "Octomom" Nadya Suleman in conceiving octuplets should be placed on five years' probation, a judge says.

Dr. Michael Kamrava has been accused of gross negligence and incompetence in his treatment of Suleman and two other patients, and the Medical Board of California moved to revoke his medical license, the Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday.

However, Administrative Law Judge Daniel Juarez has recommended to the board that Kamrava be placed on probation, complete an ethics course and continue to practice under the supervision of another doctor.

Juarez said he was not convinced Kamrava was negligent in his treatment of Suleman or incompetent in his treatment of all three patients.

In his recommendation, Juarez said he was not persuaded that Kamrava was "a maverick or deviant physician, oblivious to standards of care in IVF" and added Kamrava "succeeded in presenting a defense to the majority of the allegations" against him.

The state medical board is expected to examine the judge's recommendation when it meets Thursday, board spokeswoman Jennifer Simoes said.
