Cheney reaches 'truce' with ex-colleagues

NEW YORK, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- Former Vice President Dick Cheney said Friday he has called a "truce" with old colleagues over the Iraq war and is going hunting again.

Asked during an interview with NBC on the 20th anniversary of the Persian Gulf War if he had "made peace" with colleagues such as Brent Scowcroft and Colin Powell who criticized his policies as vice president, Cheney replied, "I prefer to think of it as a truce ... ."

"Clearly we had differences on subsequent policy issues," he said. "I looked at Saddam Hussein differently after 9/11 than before 9/11, as Colin pointed out. … I was in the bunker under the White House on 9/11. ... And I was bound and determined, as was the president I then worked for, that that was never gonna happen again on our watch."

Cheney, who had a heart pump installed six months ago, also said he will soon be going hunting with former Secretary of State James Baker, who quipped about when Cheney shot a hunting companion in 2006.

"I have some good body armor that I'm gonna wear," Baker said.
