Cops still seek clues in Zahra Baker case

HICKORY, N.C., Dec. 19 (UPI) -- Police say they continue investigating the killing of a North Carolina girl even though they turned their findings thus far over to prosecutors.

Hickory, N.C., Police Chief Tom Adkins said any new evidence developed in the case of 10-year-old Zahra Baker would be added to the file that was sent to the Catawba County District Attorney's office late last week.

"We turned over a preliminary case file to the district attorney's office for him to start reviewing and consider what course of action he wants to take concerning who he wants to charge and what charges he wants to pursue," said Adkins.

The Hickory Daily Record said Sunday that Adkins declined to provide details of what he turned over to prosecutors.

Hickory police jailed Zahra's stepmother, Elisa Baker, in October on various outstanding warrants. They later charged her with obstruction of justice for allegedly forging a ransom note found at the Baker home.

Zahra was reported missing Oct. 9. Her dismembered remains were found in November.
