Three killed by So. Calif. Amtrak train

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- Three men were killed in Southern California when an Amtrak train hit them as they walked along the tracks, authorities said.

The accident happened Monday evening in Commerce, Calif., when a conductor on the train from San Diego bound for Union Station in Los Angeles spotted the men on the tracks but was unable to stop the train in time, KTLA-TV, Los Angeles, reported.

The three men, said to be in their mid-20s, were pronounced dead at the scene in the 6700 block of Telegraph Road.

Amtrak service through the area was suspended temporarily as LA County fire crews and LA County Sheriff's detectives conducted their investigation.

Investigators said the men might have been walking on the train trestle that crosses over Telegraph Road when they were struck but had not confirmed that, KTLA-TV said.

There were 125 passengers on board the Amtrak train at the time.
