N.J. medical marijuana debate continues

TRENTON, N.J., Dec. 14 (UPI) -- The debate over New Jersey's medical marijuana law continues with the state Legislature ordering Gov. Chris Christie to rewrite proposed regulations.

State Sen. Nicholas Scutari, a Democrat, said Monday the Republican governor's rules place too much of a limit on how potent marijuana can be, The Star-Ledger of Newark reported. Advocates for medical marijuana also object to regulations drafted by the attorney general that say doctors with patients using medical marijuana must try to get them off the drug as quickly as they can.

Scutari introduced a resolution aimed at the attorney general a few hours after the Senate passed one directed at Christie. He called the attorney general's regulations "chilling," saying they seemed designed to scare doctors away from recommending marijuana for patients.

Michael Drewniak, a spokesman for the governor, accused Scutari of delaying the law's implementation. Medical marijuana is scheduled to become available in the state July 1, but rewriting the regulations could mean postponing the start date.
