Ex-House aide escapes fine, heads to jail

WASHINGTON, Nov. 24 (UPI) -- A former House aide will not be fined for stealing campaign funds but must repay $252,000, the Federal Election Commission has decided.

Michael Sohn also will be forbidden to work or volunteer on a federal political committee for 10 years under the FEC ruling Tuesday, Roll Call reported.

Sohn was indicted last year in the embezzlement from former Rep. Christopher Shays, R-Conn., and made a plea bargain.

In September, a federal judge in Connecticut sentenced Sohn to 37 months and ordered him to pay more than $348,000 in restitution, including $252,000 to Shays' campaign committee. He will pay some $95,000 to the Internal Revenue Service with interest.

Sohn is to enter prison Tuesday.
