Priest jailed for release violations

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Nov. 9 (UPI) -- A Florida priest charged with molesting a boy in the 1990s has been jailed for a psychological evaluation.

Neil Doherty of Lake Worth was incarcerated last week, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported. Doherty was charged in 2006 with repeatedly molesting one boy during a seven-year period.

Doherty retired from the priesthood in 2002 after serving at churches in Margate and Fort Lauderdale.

At a hearing Monday, the Broward County Sheriff's Office presented evidence that Doherty's electronic monitoring device had lost contact at least eight times, most recently in October for 17 minutes. Doherty said that on the last occasion he was attending a funeral.

Broward County Circuit Judge Ilona Holmes ordered the psychological evaluation and said she would order new "rather strict" release conditions, depending on the findings.

"Anybody else would be in jail," she said. "What concerns me are the violations in the past and the defendant's age."
