6.9 quake in Mexico's Gulf of California

GOLDEN, Colo., Oct. 21 (UPI) -- A strong magnitude 6.9 earthquake struck Thursday in Mexico's Gulf of California, U.S. seismologists reported.

There were no initial reports of any damage or injuries from the shaker, which was centered in the gulf about 55 miles south of Los Michos in Sinaloa state.

The epicenter was also not far from the Baja California resort city of Cabo san Lucas, a popular destination for American tourists.

The U.S. Geological Survey said in a written statement that the quake hit shortly before noon and was at a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometers (6.2 miles). Reports to the agency indicated some modest shaking was felt along the Sinaloa coast.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a statement saying a major tsunami was unlikely but cautioned that localized waves were possible.
