LOS ANGELES, Oct. 18 (UPI) -- The fertility doctor who treated octuplets mother Nadya Suleman should lose his license for "deliberately" flouting the rules, California argued Monday.
"This is not a situation of not knowing better, but rather of deliberately ignoring the standards of care," Deputy Attorney General Judith Alvarado said in opening statements at Michael Kamrava's hearing before the state medical board, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The board is accusing Kamrava of gross negligence in the "Octomom" case and the case of a 48-year-old woman who became pregnant with quadruplets.
Alvarado called him a doctor whose practice "was littered with multiple extreme and simple departures from the standard of care for an (in vitro fertilization) specialist." She said Kamrava transferred "an excessive number of embryos" and ignored screening guidelines.
Kamrava's attorney, Henry Fenton, described him in opening statements as a "respected physician and surgeon" who is "still friendly" with Suleman and the other patient.
Kamrava has already been expelled from the American Society of Reproductive Medicine for a pattern of behavior detrimental to the industry. He continues to practice in Beverly Hills.
