Police have not identified the suspect. They said he was shot in the chest and taken into surgery, where he died.

Two officers were hit by gunfire, one shot in the foot, the other in the leg, authorities said. Both injuries were minor.

Jeff Mumm, a lawn worker, told the World-Herald he was getting ready to cut weeds when he saw two officers outside the building.

The officers, both women, asked him if he had seen a man talking on the phone. Mumm walked into the hospital, acting as if he were getting a drink of water. He said he saw a man in a coat and baseball cap using a pay phone.

Mumm then walked back outside and told the officers what he had seen.

The officers went inside and Mumm heard several gunshots. Mumm said he stayed next to a concrete wall.
