Holbrooke visits flood-stricken Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- U.S. envoy Richard Holbrooke, during a visit Wednesday to a temporary camp for flooding victims in Pakistan, praised the government's flood relief efforts.

Holbrooke said the United States, which has already donated $260 million for flood relief, will divert some aid from civilian infrastructure projects, the BBC reported. The envoy traveled to a camp in the Makli area of Sindh.

"I think the Pakistan government has done a fantastic job so far, and we are here to help in any way we can," Holbrooke said.

While he also praised Army flood relief and said the United States is willing to work with the military, he said Pakistan must have a civilian government. Former President Pervez Musharraf came to power in a military coup after he was fired as chief of military staff.

"We will only support a civilian democratically elected government," Holbrooke said.
