JUPITER, Fla., Sept. 4 (UPI) -- A survivor of a Thanksgiving massacre at a Miami-area home said the accused killer made extra sure a little girl was dead, court documents revealed.
Patrick Knight, who was seriously wounded in the attack, told police he saw Paul Michael Merhige backtrack as he left 6-year-old Makayla Sitton's bedroom and fire one more shot into the child's back.
Knight, Merhige's brother-in-law, was among a group of family members celebrating the holiday at a relative's home in Jupiter, Fla. Police say Merhige arrived unannounced and opened fire, killing four people, including his own twin sisters.
Merhige was arrested Jan. 2 at a motel in the Florida Keys. A trial date will be set at a court hearing in November.
The Palm Beach (Fla.) Post said Knight's account was among several documents released by prosecutors this week. They offered chilling details of the crime and the alleged planning Merhige put into it, but not much insight into why he might have targeted his family.
