Knox: She and ex-boyfriend write often

PERUGIA, Italy, July 15 (UPI) -- Amanda Knox, the Seattle college student convicted in Italy of killing her roommate, says she and her former boyfriend "give each other strength."

Knox, 23, and Raffaele Sollecito, 26, are both serving lengthy prison terms. Prosecutors said they killed Meredith Kercher, a British student sharing a house with Knox while they studied in Perugia, during a drug-fueled sex game.

In an interview with the magazine Oggi, Knox said she and Sollecito stay in touch, the Italian news agency ANSA reported.

''We often write to each other, we give each other strength,'' Knox said. ''We have ended up in a surreal affair that we still don't understand. It's terrible, but at least it unites us. The affection remains from the love we had.''

Knox, Sollecito and a third defendant, Rudy Guede, an immigrant from Ivory Coast, are all appealing the guilty verdicts.

At the time of the killing, Knox was an exchange student from the University of Washington.
