Poll: Americans fret about healthcare cost

PRINCETON, N.J., March 30 (UPI) -- A majority of Americans worry about the financial effects of the new healthcare law on the country and themselves, a Gallup Poll released Tuesday indicates.

Fifty-five percent of the respondents in the poll said healthcare costs and the federal budget deficit will worsen because of the bill President Barack Obama signed into law last week, Gallup said.

Half of those polled said they believe healthcare costs for themselves and their families will climb.

The Princeton, N.J., polling agency said respondents were:

--Slightly more positive than negative, 44 percent to 40 percent, about the bill's impact on healthcare coverage and on the overall health of Americans, 40 percent to 35 percent.

-- Evenly split when asked if the bill will make their overall health better or worse, but a majority say it will have no impact.

-- More negative than positive, 34 percent to 24 percent, when asked about the impact of the bill on their healthcare coverage and quality of healthcare received, 35 percent to 21 percent.

Results are based on nationwide telephone interviews with 1,033 adults conducted Friday through Sunday. The margin of error is 4 percentage points.
