States may struggle under healthcare law

WASHINGTON, March 27 (UPI) -- Some U.S. states are struggling with the burdens imposed by the new federal healthcare law, officials say.

The New York Times reports officials across the country are looking at the fine print in the healthcare overhaul to understand how their states are affected. For many states, the law will prove a burden, the report says.

Under the provisions of the new healthcare law, Arizona legislators now must find a way to keep insurance coverage for 350,000 children and adults that they cut last week to help close a $2.6 billion budget deficit, the Times said. Louisiana officials say under the new law a cut in federal money to hospitals that treat the uninsured could be the death blow for their state-run charity hospital system, the Times reported.

California policymakers estimate they will have to come up with an added $500 million a year to make required increases in payments to Medicaid providers, the Times said.
