NEW YORK, March 23 (UPI) -- The community organizing group ACORN, citing a lack of funds, said it would shutter any remaining state affiliates and field offices by April 1.
The organization said it was "developing a plan to resolve all outstanding debts, obligations and other issues," The New York Times reported Tuesday.
ACORN, an acronym for Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, has been buffeted by criticism from the right and lost federal money since a video sting last fall. In the undercover tapes, ACORN employees were seen advising a couple -- two conservative activists dressed as a pimp and his prostitute -- on concealing their criminal activities.
In response to the videos, the Census Bureau severed its partnership with ACORN for the 2010 Census, the Internal Revenue Service dropped the group from its Voluntary Income Tax Assistance program and Congress voted to end all grants to the organization. Private donations have dried up as well.
ACORN's Web site said the organization has national headquarters in New York, New Orleans and Washington.
