Baltimore mayor to be sentenced and resign

BALTIMORE, Feb. 3 (UPI) -- Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon is "unrepentant" for the actions that are forcing her out of office, a Maryland prosecutor says in a memo.

State Prosecutor Ronald Rohrbaugh released the memo Tuesday, The Baltimore Sun reported. Dixon is to resign Thursday when she is sentenced under an agreement allowing her to collect a city pension.

"It seems Ms. Dixon's unrepentant position is that the people of Baltimore should be willing to tolerate some corruption from their political leaders," Rohrbaugh wrote in the memo. "Such defiant arrogance by a political leader is simply unacceptable."

Rohrbaugh defended the plea agreement while conceding allowing Dixon to get $83,000 (in pension) a year is "difficult for everyone, including the prosecution team, to swallow."

Dixon was convicted in December of a misdemeanor count of stealing about $500 in gift cards donated to help needy families. In January, she pleaded guilty to perjury under an agreement that spares her jail time and calls for her record to be expunged.

Dixon must resign from office, perform 500 hours of community service and contribute $45,000 to charity.
