Hearing delays Tiller jury selection

WICHITA, Kan., Jan. 13 (UPI) -- Jury selection in the murder trial of the man accused of slaying Kansas abortion doctor George Tiller was delayed again Wednesday.

The process of selecting jurors in the murder trial of Scott Roeder, accused of shooting and killing Tiller last year, was originally set for Monday and then rescheduled for early Wednesday.

But Sedgwick County District Judge Warren Wilbert again delayed the proceedings to consider whether the jury selection should be open to the public, The Wichita Eagle reported.

The newspaper said Wilbert met with prosecutors, Roeder's defense attorneys and a lawyer representing the Eagle and other media outlets following the Kansas Supreme Court's order Tuesday that Wilbert reconsider his decision to close the jury selection proceedings.

The hearing was reportedly set for mid-morning Wednesday in Wilbert's chambers.

Roeder, 51, has admitted to the May 31 killing of Tiller at the doctor's Wichita church, but maintains it was necessary to protect unborn children. Wilbert has barred a "necessity" defense, however, and Roeder's lawyers are expected to argue for a voluntary manslaughter charge, the Eagle said.
