Dixon lawyers ask for mistrial

BALTIMORE, Dec. 11 (UPI) -- Lawyers for Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon asked a judge Friday to declare a mistrial in the case in which she was convicted of embezzlement.

Arnold Weiner, Dixon's lead attorney, submitted a 41-page brief that argued at least two jurors lied when questioned before they were selected for the panel, The Baltimore Sun reported. Weiner said five jurors also got in touch with one another during the trial via Facebook.

Judge Dennis Sweeney also gave jurors confusing instructions, Weiner said.

State prosecutors had charged Dixon with several felonies. But she was convicted last week only of a single misdemeanor for using gift cards intended for needy families.

A sentencing date has not been set.
