Baltimore mayor regrets scandal's impact

BALTIMORE, Dec. 4 (UPI) -- Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon said she regrets the impact her gift card scandal conviction had upon the city of Baltimore.

The Baltimore Sun said Friday that Dixon did not offer specifics regarding her future in the wake of being convicted on a misdemeanor charge related to the embezzlement of gift cards intended for the needy.

"I am reflecting on the trial's outcome, talking with advisers, talking with God and reviewing my options," the mayor said Thursday. "I deeply regret that the citizens of Baltimore have had to go through this ordeal with me," she added.

Dixon was soliciting gift cards from a developer, then spending the cards instead of giving them to the needy as planned.

A sentencing date for Dixon, who was acquitted on three additional counts, has not been set. The Baltimore official could receive probation or could be sentenced to as much as five years in prison.

Dixon could attempt to retain her position despite her conviction by arguing the criminal transgression took place while she was president of the Baltimore City Council in 2005, the newspaper said.
