Ga. school district facing uniform protest

JONESBORO, Ga., Nov. 25 (UPI) -- A school district official in Clayton County, Ga., said more than 1,500 students took part in a protest by wearing "non-appropriate dress" to their schools.

District spokesman Charles White confirmed that last week's protest was organized and those who took part in the demonstration were facing punishments ranging from detentions to suspensions, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Tuesday.

"Based on an incomplete survey of schools, the district has determined that more than 1,500 students arrived at school on Friday in non-appropriate dress," White said in a statement.

"In several cases, this was in direct defiance of school-level administrative instructions to students advising them to be in uniform dress or face consequences for their actions," he added.

White said the demonstration at nine high schools in the district was organized by participants online and was tabbed Protest As One.

The Journal-Constitution said the protest comes the same year that Clayton County high school students were required to wear uniform dress. Previously, only elementary and middle school students in the county faced mandatory uniform dress.
