Prosecutors: Kercher killed as punishment

ROME, Nov. 20 (UPI) -- British exchange student Meredith Kercher was killed by her roommate Amanda Knox in Perugia, Italy, in an act of revenge, prosecutors alleged Friday.

The Italian news agency ANSA said the prosecution accused Knox, a 22-year-old student from the United States, of killing Kercher, 21, in response to arguments about money and friends.

Lead prosecutor Giuliano Mignini alleged Friday Knox was helped in her attempt at revenge by her former Italian boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, 26, and Ivory Coast native Rudy Guede.

Mignini said the suspects went to the two female students' house in Perugia in November 2007 and confronted Kercher.

''At that point, there was an argument about money, or perhaps because Meredith wasn't happy about Guede coming over, followed by an attempt to get her involved in some kind of sex game. And that's when her ordeal began,'' Mignini alleged.

The prosecution maintains Knox slit Kercher's throat as Sollecito held the British national down.

ANSA said, according to unidentified judicial sources, a verdict in Knox's ongoing murder trial is expected in early December.
