"We are all shocked by the attack that occurred in one of our chemistry teaching labs," UCLA Chancellor Gene Block said in a statement. "I know you join me in wishing for the speedy recovery of the young woman who was injured; our thoughts are with her and her family."

Police allege UCLA student Damon D. Thompson slashed the throat of the unidentified victim Thursday afternoon between class sessions at the university.

An unidentified law enforcement source told the Times a verbal altercation may have taken place before the attack.

The Times said the victim suffered serious injuries in the attack and her condition is improving after undergoing surgery. Meanwhile, Thompson was charged with suspicion of attempted murder.
