Russia: U.S. helping arm Syrian rebels

MOSCOW, Oct. 26 (UPI) -- The U.S. government is providing logistical support for the delivery of weapons to anti-government forces in Syria, a Kremlin official said.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said it was "well-known" the U.S. government was aware that foreign suppliers were delivering weapons to Syrian rebel forces. The United States, he said, is suspected of providing "coordination and logistics support for such deliveries," he was quoted by state-run news agency RIA Novosti as saying.

The Kremlin this week said there was evidence to suggest Syrian rebels were using U.S.-made Stinger missiles during their campaign against the government.

"We are calling on all countries to stop feeding illegal armed formations in Syria, do everything possible to prevent (man-portable air-defense systems) from getting into the hands of those whose actions are impossible to control, especially with account for militants' threats to shoot down civil aircraft," Lukashevich said.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said any suggestion that Washington was coordinating the shipment of foreign weapons into Syria was "ludicrous."

A car-bombing Friday in Damascus was an indication that prospects for a temporary cease-fire to mark the Muslim religious holiday of Eid al-Adha were dim. Syrian peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi announced Wednesday the Syrian government has spoken in favor of the truce.
