Dissident monk detained in Myanmar

YANGON, Myanmar, Feb. 10 (UPI) -- A monk in Myanmar, freed by the government in January, was taken from a monastery in Yangon by regional authorities, a witness said.

Shin Gambira, a monk freed by Myanmar's government along with hundreds of political prisoners, was taken from a monastery by regional authorities, another monk told the BBC.

Gambira was jailed in 2007 for demonstrating against the government. He was arrested after apparently opening monasteries closed by the government after the so-called Saffron Revolution in 2007.

The BBC noted that Gambira has expressed his suspicion about government reforms since he was released from prison last month.

Western governments have moved closer to Myanmar since the country had its first general election in years in 2010.

"I encouraged the ambassador and his government to maintain the momentum for change," said British Foreign Office Minister Jeremy Browne during a meeting this week with Myanmar's Ambassador U Kyaw Myo Htut.

Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, who spent several years under house arrest in Myanmar, this week entered a race in by-elections for Myanmar's Parliament. Her National League for Democracy Party won elections in the 1990s though the military junta refused to recognize the results.
