KATHMANDU, Nepal, Nov. 10 (UPI) -- After successful elections in Nepal recently, the United Nations is calling on leaders in the country to continue working toward peace.
Ambassador Jorge Urbina, current president of the United Nations Security Council, has called on Nepal's new president, Ram Baran Yadav, and leaders of the major opposition parties in the country to work together to prevent a return to violence, the United Nations reported.
U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon also recently called on leaders in Nepal to continue the peace process and move forward on integrating thousands of former Maoist rebel fighters into mainstream society.
The U.N. Security Council acknowledged Nepal's progress made toward peace, but Urbina called on leaders to seek the middle ground on issues and "work together in a spirit of compromise," the release said.
Urbina also encouraged continued cooperation with the United Nations mission in the country which manages Nepal's armed forces.
