55 percent of colleges report swine flu

WASHINGTON, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- More than half the 165 U.S. colleges tracking swine flu say they have infected students, the American College Health Association said Wednesday.

The association plans weekly reports on swine flu at colleges and universities. In the first report, 55 percent of the colleges said they had cases in a total of 1,640 students, The Washington Post reported.

"Young adults are among those predisposed to H1N1 infection, and preliminary reports suggest significant risk of outbreaks on college campuses, presumably due to a higher density of persons (originating from throughout the nation and world) in congregate learning, living and social environments," the association said.

The virus was first reported in the spring with the first cases in Mexico. It spread quickly to become a global outbreak.

Most people who contract swine flu experience mild symptoms and quickly shake off the disease, and most of the reported deaths have been in those with other health problems.
