TVA says reforms planned after ash spill

NASHVILLE, July 29 (UPI) -- The chairman of the Tennessee Valley Authority said reforms called for by the agency's inspector general would be brought up Aug, 20 at the next board meeting.

Chairman Mike Duncan said in a written statement the recommendations were largely in line with reforms called for by the TVA inspector general's report on the coal ash spill that inundated Kingston, Tenn., last December.

The report was the subject of a congressional hearing Tuesday in which the inspector general contended the TVA improperly influenced what was to have been an independent report on the incident conducted by an outside engineering firm.

The report said TVA management sought to minimize its liability in the incident and that agency officials did not have the necessary safeguards in place to prevent the 300-acre spill.

TVA Chief Executive Officer Mike Kilgore said after the hearing, the inspector general's report was overly harsh and "his job is to find problems. My job is to fix them,'' The (Nashville) Tennessean reported.
