GUELPH, Ontario, July 20 (UPI) -- Human remains found by Ontario Provincial Police are probably those of an 8-year-old Woodstock girl missing for three months, a police official said Monday.
When the remains were found on private property Sunday about 25 miles northwest of Guelph in the southwestern part of the province, police would not say whether they belonged to Victoria Stafford. They are now almost certain the remains are those of the missing girl.
"We have some very strong leads that cause us to believe that we have in fact located the human remains of (Victoria) Tori Stafford," Ontario Provincial Police Commissioner Julian Fantino told the Canadian Broadcasting Co.
Police sealed off the area where the remains were found and were treating the site as a crime scene, the Toronto Star said.
Stafford was last seen in Woodstock in early April on her way home from school. The Star reported Terri-Lynne McClintic, 19, and Michael Rafferty, 28, were arrested May 19 and charged with murder in connection with the child's disappearance.
