COLUMBIA, S.C., June 28 (UPI) -- South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford decided to serve out his term after considering resigning, his spokesman told ABC News.
Sanford announced last week he was having an affair with a woman from Argentina but declined to step down from office with 18 months left on his term.
"Given everything that has gone on, it's obviously something he considered, but he's determined to serve out his term," Sanford's communication director Joel Sawyer, told ABC.
Sanford's remaining months in office may not be overly contentious. ABC said it appears to be unlikely that any criminal investigation will take place, and Sanford has agreed to pay back the public funds used to pay for a trip to South America last year.
Sanford was in his final term so he was already a lame-duck.
