NEW DELHI, June 12 (UPI) -- A growing tourism trend in India involves visitors to the Asian country following in the footsteps of famed spiritual leader Mohandas K. Gandhi, experts say.
National Gandhi Museum director Varsha Das said that during the last three years tourism interest in the late Indian independence leader's life has increased in India, The Washington Post reported Friday.
"It is very heartening to see a resurgence of interest in Gandhi across the world," Das said. "Foreign tourists who follow his trail are filled with tremendous reverence."
Tourists can visit numerous sites dedicated to Gandhi including museums and memorials, along with the birthplace of the late spiritual leader.
Varun Mathur, co-founder of the tour group Tallis & Co., told the Post that young tourists are the ones most interested in the place of Gandhi's assassination. Gandhi was shot and killed in New Delhi in 1948.
"Young tourists want more action and are interested in the scene of the assassination. The older people want to understand his philosophy," Mathur said. "It is not just a tour -- we create a Gandhi experience that will stay with them."
